What is a Healthy Home?
Unsafe housing conditions contribute to serious health issues like lead poisoning, respiratory illnesses, cancer, and injuries, leading to poor school performance, missed work, and loss of life. These hazards disproportionately impact low-income and communities of color, making healthy housing a critical environmental and racial justice issue.

Though lead-based paint for use in homes was banned in the U.S. in 1978, it is still present in millions of homes, especially those built before 1978. Lead-based paint is usually not a hazard if it is in good condition. However, deteriorating (peeling, chipping, chalking, cracking, or damaged) lead-based paint is a hazard and needs prompt attention.
