Treatment for COVID-19
INCREASING ACCESS TO COVID-19 MEDICATION
The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) has established the COVID-19 Therapeutics Equity Grant Program to expeditiously connect patients who test positive for COVID-19 with therapeutic treatment to decrease related morbidity and mortality. The goal of this program is to improve access to COVID-19 treatment in communities disproportionately affected by COVID-19 and with the greatest barriers to care. There are five (5) pharmacy grantees and three (3) clinic system grantees in Ventura County.
These grantees serve as Test-to-Treat sites; meaning if you feel sick you can go to one of these sites to test for COVID-19 and, if positive and eligible for treatment, leave the location with your medication in hand! Some pharmacies will even deliver the medication to your doorstep. COVID-19 testing, and treatment will be provided regardless of insurance or immigration status.

INCREASING ACCESS TO COVID-19 MEDICATION
The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) made a new plan to help people who have COVID-19. It’s called the COVID-19 Therapeutics Equity Grant Program. This plan helps sick people get better faster and stops more people from getting really sick or even dying. The program helps people in communities that have more problems with COVID-19. Ventura County has five places that give out medicine and three places that help sick people. These places are called Test-to-Treat sites. If you feel sick, you can go there and get tested. If you have COVID-19 and need medicine, you can get it there too. Some places even bring the medicine to your home! You can get tested and medicine whether you have medical insurance or not.

If your provider is unable to offer any of the treatment options detailed above, they may use the COVID-19 Therapeutics Locator to find administering/dispensing sites for you.
If you’re feeling sick or have tested positive for COVID-19, one of the safest ways to find out what medical care you may need is by phone or video while staying at home. This is called “telehealth.” If a telehealth provider determines that you should receive prescription medication for COVID-19 treatment, they can send a prescription to your local pharmacy or help you get a prescription filled through the mail. Some pharmacies, such as Walgreens may offer next-day or even same-day delivery. Check with your pharmacy or provider to see what delivery options may be available to you. Two pills have received emergency use authorization to treat the virus that causes COVID-19: Pfizer’s Paxlovid and Merck’s Molnupiravir. This type of treatment must be given within five (5) days since you start feeling sick. You need a prescription from a medical provider to receive either pill. Then a pharmacy needs to dispense, or provide, the pills that were prescribed.

HHS launched a new nationwide Test to Treat initiative in March 2022 to give individuals an important way to quickly access free lifesaving treatment for COVID-19. Through this program, you are able to get tested and – if positive and treatments are appropriate for you – receive a prescription from a health care provider, and have your prescription filled all at one location. Click here to learn more about the Test to Treat program and here to find Test to Treat locations near you.
Those who may have difficulty accessing the internet or need additional support locating a Test to Treat site can call 1-800-232-0233 (TTY 1-888-720-7489) to get help in English, Spanish, and more than 150 other languages – 8am to midnight ET, 7 days a week.
The Disability Information and Access Line (DIAL) is also available to specifically help people with disabilities access services.
Cost
Patients should never be charged for Paxlovid (nirmatrelvir/ritonovir) or Lagevrio (molnupiravir). If you or another patient was told you would be charged for these medications, please report this to CDPH to help address this issue.
While there is currently no cost for most COVID-19 treatments themselves, the treating facility may charge for the administration of the drug. Medicare and Medicaid cover all costs. Check your insurance plan, as many large private insurance plans cover costs. If you do not have insurance, ask the treatment facility if there are fees.
As of March 22, 2022 the Health Resource & Services Administration (HRSA) program has stopped accepting claims for COVID-19 testing and treatment due to lack of sufficient funds. Click here for more information.
Through the California Department of Health Care Services, the COVID-19 Uninsured Group program is a new COVID-19 program that replaces Presumptive Eligibility (PE) for COVID-19. The COVID-19 Uninsured Group program provides temporary, no cost diagnostic testing, testing-related services, and treatment services, including all medically necessary care, which includes associated office, clinic, or emergency room visits related to COVID19. This program is available to uninsured and underinsured individuals determined eligible by a Qualified Provider (QP) based on preliminary applicant information. Click here for more information.
